Firenze Marathon’s last organized race before the summer is about to take place. The classic Notturna di San Giovanni, 79th edition, the oldest race in Italy is about to be held. It is the most important 10km event in Florence, and takes place entirely through the historic streets of the city.
The race will take place on Saturday, June 16 beginning at 9:00 pm, with start and end in Piazza Duomo. In addition to the 10km race, there is also the 4km Family Run. This year, the event is a part of the 10k series of Fidal Toscana, which is made up of a series of eight events, on track and in the street, each of which is 10km long. The race therefore allows for chronometric qualification for competitive races.The event is organized by the Firenze Marathon together with Atletica Firenze Marathon and is sponsored by the Comune di Firenze. The event was presented today in Palazzo Vecchio with the presence of sports minister Andrea Vannucci and Giancarlo Romiti, Firenze Marathon President. At least 3000 runners are expected to participate. The event takes place, as with tradition, the last Saturday before the celebration of Florence’s Patron Saint, San Giovanni Battista, a party which culminates with the traditional fireworks display on June 24. Around 250 volunteers from the Firenze Marathon will assist along the race route and help the runners before, during and after the race.
All participants will receive the Asics commemorative t-shirt designed by a Florentine artist. The shirt was unveiled today during the presentation. The honor was given to Giovanni Giusti, representing the Gruppo Donatello, which has collaborated with Firenze Marathon for years. Asics, the marathon’s main sponsor, will also be integrated with technical material including the prizes for the best athletes. Over 200 athletes will receive recognition.
THE VILLAGE AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
Piazza Duomo, the afternoon before the race, will hold the numerous stands of the sports village, including a stand from Huawei, the event’s named sponsor, and international mobile phone leader. Athletes will have access to free massages before, and after the race thanks to Pharmanutra with Cetilar products.
Albatravel, Firenze Marathon’s official travel provider, has organized travel packages which are available on the marathon website, www.firenzemarathon.it. As is the tradition, the Italian Military will be present at the 79th edition of the Notturna di San Giovanni, with a promotional stand in Piazza San Giovanni near the famous baptistery. Refreshments will be provided by Enervit, with San Benedetto water and Conad products. Universo Sport will have a stand, as well, as an official partner of the event.
REGISTRATIONS FOR THE COMPETITIVE RACE CLOSE FRIDAY, JUNE 15
Registration for the 10km race will close definitively on Friday, June 15 at 6:00 pm. Afterwards, registration for the 4km family run will remain open and can be completed in piazza before the race on the day.
Online registrations (via EnterNow – www.firenzemarathon.it) will close at midnight on June 14.
Runners who register online or via fax can pick up their race bib at the Firenze Marathon office located at Viale Fanti 2, in the Asics Firenze Marathon Stadium, from Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. They can also be picked up directly in Piazza Duomo the day of the race after 6:00 pm.

Online registration is available at www.firenzemarathon.it and at enternow until midnight on June 14. In the stores until 6:00 pm on Friday, June 15.
Training Consultant will handle the pacing, with three teams running at rhythms of 5’/km, 5’30”/km, and 6’/km. The race assistants will begin together with the top runners and will keep pace for the first kilometer. Training Consultant will also offer warmup training before the race for those interested.
The day following the race, there will be a collective training session of around 13km around Florence’s hills. The meeting point is at 8:30 am in Piazza Mino da Fiesole, from where there will be a transfer service to Villa Monetti, in Via dei Bosconi, where the run will start out. Following the run, bagged lunch will be served.
LAST YEAR’S RACE
Last year the race was won by Erastus Kipkorir Chirchir of Futura Roma who finished in 32’34 just ahead of Josphat Kimutai Koech of Libertas Runners Livorno in 32’37”, and third place went to Burundian from Altetica Casone Noceto, Joachim Nshimirimana, 32’44”. Fourth place went to Greek Ioannis Magkriotelis dell’Isolotto (34’14”). Then, from Kenya was Henry Masoi (Atletica Castello, 34’29”). Sixth Hicham Midar from Podistica Castelfranchese (35’05”), ahead of David Fiesoli dell’Aurora Montale, seventh place and first place for the Italians with a time of 35’06”.
For the women, first place went to Marta Bernardi, running for Le Panche Castelquarto (38’07”) ahead of Margherita Cibei from Atletica Alta Toscana (38’20”), third was Tiziana Gianotti tesserata for l’Atletica Castello (38’44”). Fourth was the winner from 2016, Anna Spagnoli of Edera Forlì who finished in 39’30”. Then followed Denise Cavallini del Lammari, Chiara Giachi from Atletica 2005, Sara Colzi from Atletica Prato, Stefania Delbecchi from Atletica Vinci, Benedetta Bini from Atletica Futura e Laura Chiaramonti from Luivan Settignano.
